To get a Hays Public Library Card:
- Complete this online form
- Visit any library service desk to show staff a photo ID (driver’s license, passport, student I.D.) and pick up your new card.
- If your current address does not appear on your I.D., please bring a utility bill or other proof of address (recently postmarked mail, checks, rent receipt, etc.)
Children under the age of 18 can get their own cards with a parent’s signature and I.D.
- Always bring your card when you come to the library.
Anyone that resides inside of the Central Kansas Library System service area can get a library card for free. People living outside of this service area can purchase a library card for $3.
A temporary resident staying at least one week within 60 miles of Hays is eligible for a free temporary library card. Applicants must complete an application and present a valid photo ID or be sponsored by an organization or current cardholder. Sponsorship serves as verification of the applicant’s temporary residence status and does not make the sponsor responsible for payment of lost library materials. These cards are restricted to 2 items checked out at a time and are valid for one year from date of issuance.
Checking Out Materials
We are proud to offer state-of-the-art checkout kiosks placed conveniently throughout the building. These allow fast, efficient checkout of all library materials.
To use a kisok: Scan your library card or enter your number and place your items on the pad or in the slot (typically no higher than 4-6 inches). Once the screen shows all green, press continue to get your receipt.
The library offers printing from any of our public computers for $.10/page for black and white and $.50/page for color. We also offer mobile printing which allows you to send print jobs from your mobile device or even your home. Nothing is printed out until you visit the Adult service desk and request they be released. Digital files are stored on the system for 24 hours before being deleted. Click on the Mobile Printing link under the services menu to be taken to the upload portal.
You can avoid overdue items and the resulting suspension of borrowing privileges by renewing your items to extend the loan period. Most items can be renewed either once or twice with the exception of new magazines, and interlibrary loan items. You will also be unable to renew an item if there is another patron waiting on hold for that item. You can renew your items in your online account, or by calling (785) 625-9014 and speaking to any service desk.
If the item you want is already checked out, you can place a hold request using the library’s catalog. When you have found the item you want in the catalog, select ‘Place Hold’ and then login with your library card number and PIN. When the item is available, we’ll let you know by email, text. If you are having difficulty placing the hold request or would like us to place the request for you, please talk to any of our service desks.
Lost or Stolen Card
Treat your library card as you would a credit card. If your card is lost or stolen, notify the library immediately to make sure no one else can use your account.
Cardholders are responsible for all materials checked out on their accounts.
If your card is lost or stolen, you can get a new card free of charge.
Patrons whose accounts are in good standing can borrow materials from other Kansas libraries with your Hays Public Library card. Visit our Interlibrary Loan webpage for details.
